The Sun
Essence
The Sun is the unconditional radiance of truth, joy, and conscious illumination—the card of the divine child who rides forth in triumph because the darkness has been traversed and the light withholds nothing. Numbered Nineteen, it is the penultimate revelation: the soul restored to its original innocence, not through ignorance but through the completion of the journey.
Upright
When The Sun appears upright, the Querent stands in the full blaze of clarity and success. The naked child rides the white horse without saddle or bridle—there is no need for control where trust is total—and behind them the great sunflowers turn their faces toward the source of all growth. The banner in the child's hand is the red flag of vitality, of blood and life and the unashamed celebration of existence. The grey wall behind is the boundary of the garden of paradise, and the child has passed beyond it, not by force but by right. This is the most favourable card in the deck. The Querent's understanding is correct. The path chosen is the right path. Success is not merely possible but assured, for the light that falls upon this moment is the light of truth, and in truth there is no failure. Relationships flourish. Health is restored. Creative work shines with the authority of authentic expression. The Querent is advised simply to receive: to stand in the warmth, to celebrate without reservation, and to allow the joy of this moment to burn away any lingering shadow of doubt. The Sun does not negotiate. It shines.
Reversed
Reversed, The Sun's light is dimmed but not extinguished. The joy is present but the Querent cannot fully access it—perhaps through self-doubt, perhaps through the feeling of being undeserving, perhaps through external circumstances that cloud what should be a clear victory. The child hesitates; the horse slows. There is success here, but the Querent does not trust it. Happiness is offered and the hand reaches out but does not quite close around it. The reversal counsels the Querent to examine what inner obstruction prevents the full reception of what the universe is plainly giving. The Sun does not reverse into darkness; it reverses into overcast. The warmth is still there. The Querent need only lift the face toward it.
