King of Swords

The King of Swords represents mature intellect, sound judgment, and the authority that comes from knowing the truth and speaking it plainly. He is the mind disciplined into wisdom, capable of cutting through confusion to render a fair decision.

A king sits on a stone throne, holding an upright sword in his right hand and resting the other on his knee. He wears a blue robe under a cloak the color of storm clouds, and butterflies and crescents are carved into the back of his throne. Behind him the sky is pale and the trees are still, the air clear after a long wind.

When the King of Swords appears upright, the querent is asked to lead with the clearest part of the mind. This is the culmination of the suit of Swords: thought refined into judgment, opinion tempered into principle. The card calls for objectivity, ethical clarity, and the willingness to speak the truth without softening it into something easier. Decisions need to be made on the merits, not on sentiment or convenience. If a situation has been clouded by feeling or distorted by other people's narratives, this is the moment to step back, examine the facts, and act on what is actually true. Authority here is earned through fairness, not asserted through force.

Reversed, the King of Swords shows intellect turned cold or cynical. Judgment hardens into harshness; clarity slips into condescension. The querent, or someone in their orbit, may be using reason as a weapon: dismissing feelings, manipulating arguments, hiding behind the appearance of logic to avoid honest engagement. There can also be the opposite distortion, a mind that has lost its edge, indecisive or compromised by bias and self-interest. The work is to recover integrity of thought. Speak truthfully without cruelty, and listen long enough to know what is actually being said before issuing a verdict.
