Three of Wands
Essence
The Three of Wands is the Lord of Established Strength—the figure who has sent the ships to sea and now watches from the cliff as the first fruits of foresight begin their return. It is the card of expansion confirmed, of enterprise set into motion and moving beyond the Querent's immediate control.
Upright
When the Three of Wands appears upright, the Querent has graduated from planning to execution, and the results are beginning to manifest. The figure stands with back turned to the viewer, gazing out over a golden sea upon which three ships sail toward distant ports. The three wands are planted firmly in the earth—the foundation is secure, the position established—and the Querent's role has shifted from builder to overseer. This card speaks of trade, of expansion, of ventures that carry the Querent's influence into territories not yet personally visited. The ships may represent collaborations, investments, creative works released into the world, or messages sent that have not yet received their reply. The Querent is advised to trust what has been set in motion. The preparations were sound; the timing was correct. Now patience is required as the venture crosses the water and reaches the far shore. Broader horizons are opening. The Querent's world is growing larger.
Reversed
Reversed, the Three of Wands warns of delays in expected returns, ventures that stall in mid-passage, or the frustrating discovery that one's reach has exceeded one's grasp. The ships are becalmed or have not yet sailed. The Querent may be experiencing the consequences of overexpansion—spreading resources too thin, committing to too many fronts, or discovering that the distant opportunity was not as ripe as it appeared from the cliff. There may be a need to bring focus back to the home position before reaching further abroad. The foundation must be re-examined.
